Bulldog Bulletin: May 2022

Hello Bulldog Families!

As we near the end of our school year, I want to congratulate the Class of 2022 upon graduating from Mahomet-Seymour High School!   We are so happy to be having our graduation ceremonies back at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts on Friday evening, May 20, 2022 at 7:00 p.m.

In other news about Mahomet-Seymour High School, U.S. News and World Report came out with the annual rankings of high schools across the country.  There are many, many ways and data sets to look at when “ranking” high schools.   This report does give a good, general snapshot of the high quality, excellent academic experience our students have at our high school.  We are ranked #63 in Illinois (out of almost 700 high schools) and we are the top ranked downstate high school in the state of Illinois.   This is something to be very proud of–and it literally takes all of us, collectively working together for many years, to establish this tradition of excellence–it doesn’t happen by accident.  Congratulations and thank you to our entire staff, from Pre Kindergarten through high school, our parents, our community and of course our students for their hard work!

Here is the report:

Other important dates:

  • May 18, 2022, 6:30 p.m.:  Senior Honors Night at MSHS
  • May 20, 2022, 7:00 p.m.:  MSHS Graduation Ceremonies, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
  • May 26, 2022:  last day of attendance for students, 1 hour early dismissal from all buildings.
  • May 27, 2022:  last day for staff
  • August 17, 2022:  FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS FOR 22-23 SCHOOL YEAR

In closing, when you get the opportunity, please welcome Dr. Kenny Lee to the school district and our community as the new superintendent of schools (klee@ms.k12.il.us).     He will officially start on July 1, 2022.

It has been a joy and honor to serve the Mahomet-Seymour Schools from 1994-2005 and again as superintendent for the past 5 years.  There were hard days for all of us over the past two years–but on the hardest of days, I still knew I had one of the best superintendent’s jobs anywhere, thanks to our students, staff, families and community.  Thank you!

Very sincerely,

Dr. Lindsey A. Hall

Superintendent of Schools

Bulldog Bulletin: April 2022

Hello Bulldog Families,

Welcome to the April 2022 edition of Bulldog Bulletin!

CURRICULUM UPDATES:

Our Board of Education recently voted NOT to adopt the new National Sex Education Standards for instruction in our Health classes.  We’ve gotten lots of questions about this, and our Health curriculum will not be changing in this particular area of instruction.

Sexuality Education has always been optional for students taking Health class.  Prior to this unit of instruction beginning, if you have a student in Health class at MSJH or MSHS, you will receive notice from the teacher about this instruction.   If you wish to “opt out” your child, you are welcome to do so by communicating with the teacher.  Alternative assignments will be developed.

After the April 19th, 2022 Board of Education meeting, several new textbooks being recommended for adoption will be on display at the Mahomet Public Library.  Parents are welcome to come and review these books during the regular hours of the Mahomet Public Library, as well as leave comments. An email reminder about this will also be sent out after the April 19th Board of Education meeting.

If you have any questions about the books, please contact Dr. Nicole Rummel, Assistant Superintendent, at 217-586-2161 or email her at:  nrummel@ms.k12.il.us

This is a great opportunity to share that in the fall we expect to be completed with an ongoing project to have all grade 6-12  class syllabus information and class reading list information online and available for parents/guardians who wish to have convenient access to that information.   This spring, we are posting syllabi for the classes where these are currently available.   This can be found on our “Curriculum” webpage.

Our Curriculum webpage continues to be updated, and can be found here:

https://www.ms.k12.il.us/documents

Click on “Curriculum Information”

As always if you have any questions regarding classroom content, instruction, assignments, books, etc., your first step as a parent should always be to consult with the appropriate classroom teacher.

REFERENDUM UPDATES:

After a year long community engagement initiative called Bulldog Blueprint, on March 21, 2022, the Mahomet Seymour Board of Education voted to place this question on the ballot in the June 28, 2022 Primary Election:

Shall the Board of Education of Mahomet-Seymour Community Unit School District Number 3, Champaign and Piatt Counties, Illinois, build and equip a school building to replace the MahometSeymour Junior High School Building on a different site owned by said School District, build and equip a transportation facility to replace the existing transportation facility, build and equip additions to and alter, repair and equip existing school buildings, improve sites and issue bonds of said School District to the amount of $97,900,000 for the purpose of paying the costs thereof?

This request is being made of our voters due to growing enrollment (which is forecasted to continue to grow) and aging facilities.  In short, we need to add capacity (space) to all of our buildings, and the age and condition of Mahomet-Seymour Junior High warrants its replacement.

Over the course of the next few months, the school district will be providing informational materials and meetings for our taxpayers to learn more about this bond issue.   This will include several “Town Hall” meetings with a presentation and opportunity to ask questions.  Dates of those meetings will be forthcoming.

A short summary of the needs that this will cover:

  • A new 6th-8th grade building, to be built on the property south of Middletown Prairie Elementary (MPE) School
  • Additions and improvements to MPE, Lincoln Trail and Mahomet-Seymour High School, which would include a Fine Arts addition.
  • Relocating our Transportation Department to the property south of MPE

We are placing information on our website about the referendum.  It can be found here:

https://www.ms.k12.il.us/

Click on “REFERENDUM 2022”.   There is a link to “Bulldog Blueprint”, which has a wealth of information about our buildings, the process used to get the district to this place, as well as a link to the Champaign County Clerk’s office.  This link to the County Clerk’s office provides information about voting, early voting and registering to vote.   Please note that in Illinois, 17 year olds can vote in a primary election if they will be 18 years old on the date of the general election, which is November 8, 2022.

Bulldog Bulletin: March 2022

Hello Bulldog Nation,

Welcome to Bulldog Bulletin–a monthly newsletter sent to parents, and staff and posted on our social media platforms so that our community and beyond can read about happenings and news from the Mahomet-Seymour School District.

I want to start off with recognizing just some of the most recent accomplishments and successes of our students.  This is not meant to be an all inclusive list–there are many more accolades that could be mentioned!

Congratulations to the following groups and people:

  • Our Wrestling Team–finished 3rd in the IHSA State Class 2A Team Duals this past weekend, bringing home a large and beautiful trophy!
  • For the first time in the program’s history, the Girls Basketball Team won the Sectional Championship on Friday, February 25, 2022.
  • Our Boys Basketball Team, Regional Champions as of Friday, February 25, 2022, will play in the Sectional on March 2, 2022
  • Max Katz was our first ever Bulldog qualifier in the IHSA State Diving Competition.
  • MSHS Winter Color Guard won the 2022 IDTA Class AA State Championship for Flag Performance on February 12th
  • Jazz Band the band was chosen to be a featured performance ensemble for the ILMEA All State Conference in Peoria in January. Only four or five Illinois high school jazz ensembles a year receive this honor!
  • ILMEA All-State Honors Chorus: Max Bartlett
  • ILMEA All-State Chorus: Lizzy Hanson, Miranda Morrissette, Leah Nykaza
  • The Jazz Band also finished 2nd at the Eastern Illinois University Jazz Band Competition.
  • WYSE Team (World Youth for Science and Engineering) won their Regional competition on Feb 26 and moves onto the Sectional.
  • Eight singers from MSJH were selected to the ILMEA District 3 Junior Honors Chorus earlier this year.
  • The MSHS Chess Team competed at the IHSA State Chess Tournament in mid-February, coming in at 46th place in an incredibly tough and challenging competition.  Our students far exceeded expectations –they entered as the 60th seed.
  • Our MSJH Wrestling Team took first place in the IESA Regional Wrestling Tournament on 2/26 and qualified 20 of our wrestlers to move on to the IESA Sectional.
  • Mahomet Seymour High School had 54 Illinois State Scholars in the Class of 2022.

The successes of our students in and out of the classroom is a reflection on our exceptional staff and coaches and the support of our parents and community–thank you.  Again–what’s listed above is just a sampling! One year ago at this time, we were struggling to get through athletic competitions and fine arts performances due to COVID 19.  What a difference a year can make!
